Skinny Cooks is a self-described “groovilicious” band whose funk-doctor melodies promise to fix whatever ails you. Skinny Cooks exudes cool with their experimentation and artistic chemistry that relies on a host of unlikely combinations. The classically trained multi-instrumentalists and composers Brianne Sargent, a member of both the Polyphonic Spree, Colab Band and Alejandro Escovedo’s backing band, and Nigel Newton who plays with Thaddeus Ford and formerly shined as a member of the Venetian Sailors share vocal duties. Sargent focuses on strings and synths, and Newton holds things down with the vibraphone, piano and percussion. Heavily influenced by jazz, funk, rock, R&B, and soul music, the duo has written more than 100 songs since their inception, repeatedly bending the norms of all the genres they enjoy. “I think music affects the society and culture at large in a positive way because it brings people together, it’s a universal language, and it’s something that people of all backgrounds can get behind and enjoy together.”
